Supergoop! Play Everyday Lotion, $22

Supergoop! Play Everyday Lotion, $22

An emerging cult favorite has come to public light recently. Admittedly late to this one, I purchased the “Supergoop!” PLAY everyday lotion about a month ago. Since then I have been unable to go a day without this. This everyday lotion with Sunflower extract and an SPF of 50* has been the newest addition to my daily routine. This product is a broad spectrum sunscreen SPF 50 and is water and sweat resistant for up to 80 minutes. Marketed as reef-safe, non-irritating, and vegan, this sunscreen effortlessly soaks in to the face and leaves no white cast. Fittingly, the scent resembles essential oils mixed with sunshine, which can be attributed to its enrichment of sunflower and rosemary oil. As someone with acne-prone and sensitive skin (especially to sunscreen), I was surprised that after using this product for a month my skin remained as it was before. In my opinion, that’s all you really need in a sunscreen. Your skincare products can do the work, and the sunscreen protects all that work without leaving a white cast. This is a reasonably priced, gets the job done, and non-irritating sunscreen that smells like expensive skin care. Bonus points for being sweat resistant and fast-absorbing. Also great under or over make-up. Pundit approved.

*Footnote-By now, we’ve all heard that any SPF over 30 is a marketing ploy/waste of money. I’ve taken the 30 seconds to dig into this further for everyone’s benefit (mainly my own as I just remembered this rumor). From what research I can find, SPF 15 filters out nearly 93% of UV-B rays, 50 can possibly get you to 97%. In this case, worth it. A $22 bottle of face sunscreen is reasonable, and 97% is good. Tip: reapplying is always important to utilize this percentage as much as possible, and recommended amount is about two fingers worth (middle and ring).

Active Ingredients: Purpose

Avobenzone 3% Sunscreen

Homosalate 10% Sunscreen

Octisalate 5% Sunscreen

Octocrylene 7.5% Sunscreen

Supergoop! makes it a point to use clean chemical sunscreen actives, and has a list of actives they recommend you avoid here: https://supergoop.com/pages/ingredients-youll-never-see-in-supergoop-products

To use…

Over final moisture layer (lotion or serum). Two finger amount. Website directions specify to reapply every 2 hours, but let’s be honest no one wants to do that. For all the people out there that don’t want to use their sunscreen up in a week-I think morning and afternoon suffices.

I have to give the full five to this one. A sunscreen that doesn’t break out the face, with clean as well as efficient ingredients, and a good smell is a diamond in the rough. Highly recommend.

Note added on 6/16/21: With all of the recent reveals of many sunscreens holding a dangerous and suspected carcinogen (Benzene), I wanted to add this edit that Supergoop does not have the dangerous and potentially harmful additive Benzene. You can find a comprehensive list of chemicals/additives that they will never include in their products above.
