Origins: powered by nature and proven by science. Origins is a environmentally conscious brand that is committed to the planet and focuses on active natural skincare powered by plant science and skin biology. I appreciate their mission and their commitment to using research and science in their products. But do their products work? Let’s find out…

Today we are going to be talking about Origins’ “Clear Improvement” mask. This is a charcoal and honey mask that is recommended for all skin types and marketed as a purifying and nourishing product. With key ingredients of bamboo charcoal, salicylic acid, and honey, this is made to draw out impurities from the pores while also leaving the skin nourished. There’s an ingredient that sticks out to me right away: honey.

I love using honey on the skin because not only does it have antibacterial properties, but it is also a humectant. Humectants are found in many lotions and cleansers. Humectants form hydrogen bonds with water molecules, which enables them to help moisturize the skin by drawing water from the lower cell layers (pulling from the dermis to the epidermis). Tip: If you don’t want to spend the money on a new mask, you could heat up some honey (test temp. before applying) and leave it on the skin for 10-20 min. I did this in college and always felt like my skin felt hydrated, healthier, and more clear. Honey is a great natural healer for the skin, and because of its antibacterial properties it is a safer natural/at home treatment than something like banana or egg that could harbor bacteria.

I like this combination of a humectant with a charcoal because the charcoal will help draw gunk out of your pores while the honey prevents the skin from feeling very tight or stripped. This is an effective and gentle formula.

Do I think this is worth it? Absolutely. I have been using this mask once a week for the past two months, and I have definitely seen a clear improvement. I like this product more than other masks I have tried because it washes off easily and leaves the skin feeling both cleaner and softer. What I really noticed about this was how my skin looked the next day after use. My skin looked more even-toned, moisturized, and clear. For the price of $34, this product is more than worth it’s price tag.

Tip: If you have acne-prone and/or sensitive skin, I recommend to always patch test. Meaning apply a small amount of product to the jaw line, to test skin reaction.

Product Specifics…

Key Ingredients: Bamboo charcoal, 3 cruelty-free honeys, salicylic acid

To Use: Once a week or as often as needed. With a purifying mask like this, I wouldn’t use back-to-back days (it’s important to give your skin break). Leave on until dry to the touch, and gently rinse off with water and/or a moist towel.

I’m giving the full five for this one. It is difficult to find a mask that purified the pores and leaves the skin even the next day, rather than pulling out impurities and causing breakouts. I also enjoy how natural while also science-based the Origins brand is. Have you tried any Origins products? Comment below!
